Research on the psychosocial aspects of interstitial cystitis, a painful chronic bladder condition which predominantly affects women, has been sparse. Uncertainty about diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis is a hallmark of interstitial cystitis which could contribute to poorer psychosocial adjustment to the illness. In the current study, associations between psychosocial adjustment, levels of uncertainty regarding interstitial cystitis, and severity of illness, were investigated. Participants were 48 women affiliated with a midwestern chapter of the Interstitial Cystitis Association. Better psychosocial adjustment was associated with less uncertainty about the illness and less severe symptoms.
