A new method for determination of velocity characteristics of the electron beam in gyrotrons is discussed. We have confirmed in the calculations that the information about axial component of electron velocities can be obtained from the analysis of interaction of the electron beam with a GHz-wave propagating in a slow-wave structure.
Multistage depressed collectors can open up new possibilities for enhancement of the overall efficiency of gyrotrons. A new method of spatial separation of electrons in the collector region is based on application of azimuthal magnetic field in combination with axial electric field. In this paper, we describe main features of this method and present a design of the 4-stage depressed collector system...
Methods of gyrotron electron beam diagnostics developed at St. Petersburg Polytechnic University are reviewed. Bremsstrahlung X-rays produced at the collector can be used for definition of electron energy distribution in the spent beam. This possibility has been tested at two megawatt-power-level gyrotrons at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. Analysis of propagation of gigahertz-frequency signals...
A new method of spatial separation of electrons with different initial energies in the helical electron beams of gyrotrons is reported. This method is based on the radial drift of electrons in the presence of crossed azimuthal magnetic and axial electric fields. The possibility of application of this method of electron sorting for effective multistage depressed collectors in gyrodevices is shown through...
The effect of cathode emission nonuniformities on electron beam quality in gyrotrons and a method for suppressing this effect by optimization of the electric field distribution in the gun region are studied experimentally and using computer modelling.
A technique for controlling electric field distribution in the near-cathode region of a magnetron-injection gun has been developed. The possibility to improve the quality of the helical electron beam by regulated non-uniformity of electric field is studied experimentally and using computer modelling. This technique is applied to enhance the efficiency of a 74.2 GHz, 100 kW gyrotron.

We simulate collective processes in the electron space charge trapped between the cathode and the magnetic mirror in gyrotrons. The characteristics of parasitic low-frequency oscillations in the trap and their influence on the parameters of the electron beam entering the cavity are studied.
