This paper presents a new type of cross coupled low loss and high selectivity bandpass filter operating at millimeter wave band. The filter is designed based on groove gap waveguide technology. A Ka-band 4th-order bandpass filter is proposed, designed and fabricated. Cross coupling between a one pair of non-adjacent resonators has been introduced to produce two transmission zeros at the frequencies...
RAL Space and its project partner PRG are tasked with providing space-qualified heterodyne receiver front-ends operating between 165.5 GHz and 325 GHz for the Microwave Sounder (MWS), the Microwave Imager (MWI) and the Ice Cloud Imager (ICI) of the MetOp Second Generation (MetOp-SG) series of satellites. The preliminary design of the receiver front-ends is now complete. Extensive tests on performance...
The activities for upgrading the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory millimetre wave radar cloud profiler are presented. The motivation for these activities and the approach are introduced. First results of these activities are presented.
Millimetre wave radar has been successfully applied in cloud research for a number of decades. The Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) has developed a 94 GHz radar based on solid state components and operated in Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) mode. The approach for improving the RF design — including the implementation of Doppler capability — and the results of this activity will be presented.
This contribution compares retrieval algorithms after Mie (quick, but neglecting the real shape of rain drops) and after Oguchi (slower, but more exact) for radar forward scattering and backscatter at frequencies of 10 and 35 GHz. The retrieved quantities were drop size distribution (DSD), rain rate and attenuation (e.g. of microwave link). Measurements of drop size distributions over one year in...
Since many years radars are known as valuable tools to retrieve rain. Applying well established relations for different types of radar allows accessing many rain parameters. For calculating the scattering function, the flattening of rain drops constitutes a non-negligible error source. In this contribution, different algorithms are applied to calculate the scattering function or the cross section...
