We discuss the theory and implementation of phased array receivers in the focal plane of a telescope as applied to the mm-wave band. Simulated performance and construction details are given for a 64 element, 70–95 GHz array receiver for use on the Green Bank Telescope (GBT).
We have developed a switchable Faraday polarization rotator for 74-110 GHz with a typical room-temperature insertion loss of 0.6 dB and a maximum of ~1.3 dB. The device uses a cylindrical ferrite rod in the mode with an axial magnetic field applied by a solenoid. The ports are square metallic waveguides transitioning to ceramic tapers, which then couple to the ferrite rod. The device is designed for...
A heterodyne receiver for the 200-300 GHz region has been developed and used in astronomical observations. Two room temperature Schottky diode mixers are used to cover this range, with LO power provided by frequency multiplied klystrons. A single crossed-waveguide frequency multiplier covers the entire range, and is found to produce adequate output power by either doubling or tripling. Signal-local...
A complete receiver for astronomical observations in the 0.9 mm region is described. The mixer uses a 2mu Schottky diode in fundamental mode waveguide. The local oscillator from a BWO is injected into the mixer with a low-loss quasi-optical diplexer. Overall system sensitivity is about 4000-5000 K SSB,over the range of 318-348 GHz.
