Recent simulation and experimental work has resulted in the realization of low-cost, substrate-based, THz wire-grid polarizers fabricated on crystalline-quartz substrates that exhibit both high extinction ratios and low insertion losses. The broad bandwidth performance of these high fill-factor wire-grid polarizers are characterized using terahertz time-domain spectroscopic techniques over a frequency...
We present the performance of ErAs:GaAs photoconductive antennas measured with a 1550-nm time-domain spectrometer. The effect of the erbium concentration is studied in terms of spectrum and dynamic range. A 1%- and 2%-Er ErAs:GaAs PC switch were tested and showed detected frequencies up to at least 2.5 and 4 THz, respectively, with a low-frequency dynamic range of ∼50 and ∼55 dB.
We present the performance of ultrafast ErAs:GaAs photoconductive-switch antennas measured with a 1550-nm time-domain spectrometer. A 1%- and 2%-Er ErAs:GaAs PC switch were tested and showed detected transmitted frequencies up to at least 2.5 and 4.0 THz, respectively, with a dynamic range of ∼50 and ∼55 dB below ∼200 GHz.
Low-cost, substrate-based, millimeter-wave-to-THz wire-grid polarizers have been fabricated on crystalline-quartz substrates using planar processing techniques. The polarizers achieve high extinction ratios (at least 60 dB) with a single layer, while maintaining low insertion loss (a few decibels) by taking advantage of previously under-utilized “spoof” surface-plasmon effects. Full-wave finite-element...
A THz wire grid polarizer was simulated, designed, and demonstrated. The polarizer consists of 40-micron periodic aluminum strips mounted on a polycarbonate substrate. Finite element numerical simulations were performed from 100 GHz to 550 GHz. The results of these simulations predicted that the transmission in perpendicular polarization would be much higher than that predicted by geometric optics,...
A fast-scanning tunable Fabry-Perot filter has been developed for signature identification in reflective THz sensor systems. The reflectors are metal mesh filters having reflectivity between 0.90 and 0.95, depending on the specific frequency. A demonstration of the filter has been carried out at 530 GHz with a resolution of ∼10 GHz (Q ∼ 50), a scan range of ∼50 GHz, and a scan time of 0.5 seconds...
A catalog of resonant absorption signatures measured on solids and liquids, by transmission and reflection, in the range of 100 GHz to 10 THz, has become a necessity for researchers in the THz field. In this work a THz database has been complied with 205 signatures of various chemical and biological materials. The database includes all published characteristic of the materials such as sample preparation,...
