In this paper, we propose a method where humanoid robot acquires meanings of grammatical connectives using direct physical feedback from human. Our system acquired 70% connectives of all connectives taught by subjects. It can be also said that robot partially learned the concept of time.
To introduce interactivity in e-learning, HTML5 and JavaScript have been widely used for years. And recent advancements of WebGL, JavaScript API for computer graphic programming that works on any modern browsers, enable us to draw animations of a fully human-like embodied computer graphics character on web-browsers. With these technologies, web-based e-learning could be more interactive. We propose...
Speech-based test is a one of the best ways to train students' level of proficiency. However, in e-learning it is difficult for students to maintain their concentration when speaking to a monitor. We propose speech-based online test system employing a human-likely embodied graphical agent as a listener. The developed system consists of three modules, user recognition, agent's non-verbal behavior realization,...
This paper presents student interaction data obtained from an e-learning system to understand student behavior and explore student learning patterns. A graphical programming course is examined in terms of individual user interests and accessed e-learning topics. The experimental results show that students primarily used the e-learning system to access topics that included a certification test exam...
E-learners have to study independently without educators, making it difficult for them to maintain interest or motivation. This study proposes the use of a human-like, embodied conversational agent in an e-learning system to interactively guide users through content and subsequently improve efficacy. Additionally, we investigate the effect of the agent's posture on users' a) learning motivation, b)...
In this paper, we describe a case study exploring two topics: understanding students' effective behaviors for e-learning and investigating the different types of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation behind student behaviors. A series of individual data were acquired from a learning management system, e-learning system, and qualification exam results, and statistically analyzed. The results demonstrated...
The current understanding is that human-likeness of a robot leads to better human perception. However, the factors have not been thoroughly studied. We conducted a laboratory experiment to examine two questions: how verb acquisition ability affects human perceptions on human-likeness and familiarity of a humanoid robot, intention to use the robot, and enjoyment and satisfaction of the interaction,...
