1.3 Gbit/s has been transmitted over 107 km of dispersion-shifted monomode fibre using a 1.55 ?m multimode laser and a GaInAs PINFET receiver, demonstrating the viability of using non-mode-stabilised lasers in long-haul high-bit-rate optical transmission systems.
We report transmission over 107 km of dispersion-shifted fibre at 16 Mbit/s using a subthreshold laser as an edge-emitting LED source, demonstrating the suitability of such a fibre-source combination for low-cost, inherently upgradable telecommunication systems.
