In this paper, we consider two seemingly unrelated problems: the hydrology problem of relation between groundwater and surface water, and a problem of identification of human gait in neuro-rehabilitation. It turns out that in both problems, we can efficiently use soft computing-motivated algorithms originally developed for image referencing.
Ordering alternatives in interval-based multi- criteria decision making problems is not a trivial task when the intervals of preference are overlapping. In this paper, we aim at giving a rational and natural way of ranking alternatives by computing the degrees of preference, taking into consideration the upper and lower bounds of the interval of preference as well as its width. We slightly modify...
In the discipline of computer security, the field of trust management design is dedicated to the design of trusted systems, in particular trusted networks. One common trusted mechanism used these days is the multi-level security (MLS) mechanism, that allows simultaneous access to systems by users with different levels of security clearance in an interconnected network. Vulnerability arises when an...
This paper discusses the design and implementation of a fuzzy inference system for the recognition of human gait phases. In particular, this work focuses on using the angles of the joints of lower limb to determine the current stage of a subject's gait cycle. The fuzzy rule-based system was developed using typical joint angle trajectories over a single gait cycle. The behavior of each joint was examined...
The restoration of healthy locomotion (gait) after stroke, traumatic brain injury, and spinal cord injury, is a major task in neurological rehabilitation. The rehabilitation process is labor intensive. Patient evaluation is often subjective, foiling determination of precise rehabilitation goals and assessment of treatment effects. To date it is the experienced clinician who continues to perform functional...
In many practical situations, we need to combine probabilistic and interval uncertainty. For example, we need to 1 A compute statistics like population mean E = 1/n.nSigmai=1xi or population variance V = 1/nnSigmai=1(xi-E)2 in situations when we only know intervals xi of possible value of xi. In this case, it is desirable to compute the range of the corresponding characteristic. Some range computation...
The aim of this paper is to present a theoretically sound approach to evaluate the impact of an attack on a computer system. However, let us note that this approach is general enough to be applied to any critical infrastructure. More specifically, we propose to use fuzzy measures and integrals, in a decision-theoretic setting to measure the consequences of an attack on a computer network. Any computer...
Abstract Interval arithmetic can be used to enclose the range of a real function over a domain. However, due to some weak properties of interval arithmetic, a computed interval can be much larger than the exact range. This phenomenon is called dependency problem. In this paper, Horners rule for polynomial interval evaluation is revisited. We introduce a new factorization scheme based on well-known...
