We transform a linearly polarized Gaussian beam into a radially polarized doughnut beam using an eight-segment spirally varying retarder (SVR) at wavelength of 808 nm, and obtain > 96% of polarization purity at far field distribution. The SVR is designed based on the linear birefringence of alpha-barium borate (alpha-BBO) crystal and fabricated using a dry etching technique.
In this study, third harmonic diode-pumped solid state (DPSS) Nd:YAG laser is used to achieve high quality precision engineering of thin polymer films through micro-drilling and micro-cutting, as well as surface patterning of micro-channels through direct beam scanning. Different thickness of thermoplastic films is used to produce the processed features and quality assessment of these micro-features...
Ultra-thin polycaprolactone (PCL) produced by bi-axial stretching was previously shown to have significant advantage for membrane tissue engineering. However, the permeability of the membrane needs to be enhanced. In this study, ablation experiments using femtosecond laser and excimer laser were carried out to modify the PCL surface. The use of the femtosecond laser produces neat drilled-through holes...
