The aim of this article is to show the wide range of the Okinawan studies. It displays a panel of the main works conducted in the field trough the centuries. We suggest that it is possible to adopt a different point of view that the one held in Japan which explains that the Okinawan studies began at the end of the 19th century and were mainly led in Okinawa and then in mainland Japan.
