In recent years, there has been a shift in the process of performing electromagnetic interference (EMI) and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing from a manual approach to a software-driven, automated approach. Generally speaking, this automation has provided numerous benefits to both those responsible for performing testing, as well as for those whose product is under test. This paper will...
The propagation effect of lightning-produced electromagnetic pulse over a large mountainous region in southern-west China has been investigated. The regional geometry data are adopted from a global digital elevation model named GTOPO30 with a horizontal resolution of 30 arc seconds and vertical accuracy of about 30 m. FDTD (Finite-difference time-domain method) is used to calculate the electromagnetic...
Recently, transformerless photovoltaic (PV) systems become popular in industrial applications due to the demands of high efficiency and low cost inverters. However, the leakage ground current and common mode (CM) electromagnetic interference (EMI) noise becomes significant so they need to be addressed. In solving the problems, a simple CM noise model is widely used. However, the model does not include...
This paper presents the design of open-end waveguide antenna array for dual-beam radiations at millimeter waves to provide an angular diversity. The array is consisted of four elements with a beam forming network (BFN) designed to form two beams with two excitation ports. The antenna architecture and BFN design are presented with the radiation examined to demonstrate the characteristics.
Electromagnetic compatibility test in reverberation chamber has unique superiority. However, the problem of uncertainty on reverberation chamber testing is focused all the time. In some immunity test, the maximum of electric field is concerned. The standard deviation relative to mean value, the width of the confidence interval and the ratio of maximum and minimum value are used to describe the uncertainty...
An investigation of flip-chip package interconnection over a wideband frequency up to 100GHz is presented in this paper. Different packages are modeled and simulated to determine the electromagnetic characteristics of flip-chip package interconnection. The electrical crosstalk has been investigated at high frequency between two flip-chip models which are separated by 0.6–0.8mm. The impact of multiple...
Radiated electromagnetic fields from video display interfaces include display information of electronic devices. This leaked information can be eavesdropped by measuring and analyzing electromagnetic emanations. These compromising electromagnetic emanations of video display interfaces are radiated from the display panel of monitor or video display interconnects such as connector and cable. In this...
In this paper, Fermat-Archimedes spiral dual-via EBG structure is designed and applied into antenna array. By combining Fermat slot line with Archimedes spiral slot line, the size of rectangle EBG cell is reduced. Mutual coupling of 2-element antenna array is simulated. Effect of EBG structure on mutual coupling is investigated. Furthermore, a 4-element antenna array with the proposed EBG structure...
With the increasing switching frequency of Gallium Nitride (GaN) based converters, their EMI issues become more and more serious. In this paper, a novel active EMI filtering method is proposed for a high frequency LLC resonant converter. Firstly, a high frequency model of the GaN based converter is given. Common mode EMI coupling paths are analyzed in detail. Secondly, an improved two-stage active...
The keyboard of a computer is often used to transmit sensitive data such as passwords. Because keyboards is electronic devices, it is forced to emit an electromagnetic wave, in the process of transmitting data. These compromising electromagnetic emanations disclose sensitive information, such as input keys on the keyboard [1]. In this paper, leaked electromagnetic radiation from the cable of the USB...
Nowadays, with the fast development of power system, gas-insulated switchgears (GIS) has been widely used in high voltage power grids because of compact structure, high reliability and easy-maintainability. At the same time, as the concept of smart grid is introduced, more and more intelligent devices are used in GIS. The disconnector switching operations always produce electromagnetic field emissions...
This paper describes the construction flow and the validation of an equivalent conducted emission model of a complex integrated circuit (a FPGA), based on the ICEM (Integrated Circuit Emission Model) modeling approach.
This paper proposes a new hardware structure for the bidirectional high-speed instrument bus. The innovations of this newly introduced structure are as following: it is much more flexible and compact, comparing to the traditional backplane structure. However, it also loses some of the advantages of the backplane on power and signal integrity. This paper analyzes the power and signal integrity challenges...
Flyback converter is widely used for its high efficiency. However due to fast switching currents and voltages, it can cause high conducted emissions in a system. In this paper we present a method to characterize the EMI noise generation and the coupling mechanism in flyback converters. We also derive analytical formulae to calculate the frequency and amplitude of this EMI noise, which provides an...
The paper investigates the stability of the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method based on the telegraph equations of transmission lines for buried horizontal wires. This kind of FDTD methods based on transmission line (TL) theory needs some closed form expressions for the ground impedance and ground admittance of buried horizontal wires (bare and insulated) for lightning or switching transient...
IOMarking method can characterize program-dependent conducted EMI (cEMI). This paper firstly proposes a direct extension for program-dependent near-field EMI (rEMI) behaviors under a complex HW/SW environment. For the program-dependent EMI analysis by IOMarking, sample rate is a major parameter that affects the bandwidth. Due to high sample rate and long program execution time, large amounts of sample...
Investigations on the electromagnetic coupling effect of rectangular split ring resonators (SRRs) coupled to coplanar waveguide (CPW) are presented. Rectangular SRRs shape alteration and its effect to transmission line performance has been studied by changing its vertical and horizontal 2-d orientation. We observe that the confined magnetic field plays an important role in determining the resonance...
In this paper, we investigate the conducted emission of I/O pins near power pairs of a microcontroller integrated circuit. Our investigation show that with the increase of the distance from the power pairs the I/O pin gives decreasing conducted emission. The spread of the conducted emission from power pairs to I/O pins can be depicted by mutual inductance and mutual capacitor in a lumped circuit model.
One electrical fast transient/burst (EFT) test case and one surge test case are demonstrated to show that EFT generators and surge generators that meet the requirements of current standards may lead to unreasonable and irreproducible test results. Analyses on this situation reveal that definition of EFT and surge waveforms is too rough. So a conclusion drawn in this paper is that more detailed definition...
Bonding wire is used to make an interconnection between ICs and the PCB board. It is small but critical in the structure. In this paper, educational 3D electromagnetic analysis software CST MWS was used to model and simulate several bonding wires with different parameters at high frequency. This paper focuses on relations between parameter changes and transmission performance of bonding wires, forming...
