Investigations on the electromagnetic coupling effect of rectangular split ring resonators (SRRs) coupled to coplanar waveguide (CPW) are presented. Rectangular SRRs shape alteration and its effect to transmission line performance has been studied by changing its vertical and horizontal 2-d orientation. We observe that the confined magnetic field plays an important role in determining the resonance frequency and the bandwidth broadening of the transmission line, which also contributes to the insertion loss difference. Our investigation provides experimental basis for developing better filtering device in the microwave and milimeter-wave range.
