Welcome to the 16th IEEE International Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Scientific and Engineering Computing (PDSEC-15), held on May 29, 2015 in Hyperabad, India, in conjunction with the 29th IEEE International Parallel and Distributed Processing Symposium (IPDPS 2015).
Online laboratories have been effective in bridging the gaps between theory and practice particularly in situations not covered by traditional hands on laboratories. Together with secondary school students we aim to develop 3 laboratory setups including a novel approach to seamlessly plug these setups to the cloud and make them available to other peers. Students will strongly be involved in the research...
Developing educational apps that cover a wide range of learning contexts and languages is a challenging task. In this paper, we introduce the AppComposer Web app to address this issue. The AppComposer aims at empowering teachers to easily translate and adapt existing apps that fit their educational contexts. Developers do not need to provide extensive translations and configurations of their apps...
Presents the introductory welcome message from the conference proceedings. May include the conference officers' congratulations to all involved with the conference event and publication of the proceedings record.
This paper explores the potential impact of the iPad/Tablet and its applications on teaching and learning, especially in the area of electrical engineering. The authors discuss the effective and innovative strategies introduced by the School of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications, the University of New South Wales (UNSW). The unique apps developed for Electrical Engineering are elaborated...
Abstracted by the great advantages of cloud, more and more business applications are moving towards cloud and deliver their functions to the public. Therefore, from the perspective of cloud user, it is of significance to evaluate and discriminate the QoS (quality of service) of functional-equivalent cloud services accurately, based on their respective historical records in the past. However, for a...
Technology has enabled students to search and utilize information from a diverse range of sources. One mechanism that students turn to for additional resources is the internet. This paper explores student interaction with an internet resource, called the Training Laboratory. This resource has multiple uses, including: 1) the training of laboratory teaching assistants; 2) providing students an opportunity...
With the continuous expansion of enrollment amount in China, the scale of graduate education is increasing quickly, and more and more attention is paid to the quality of graduate education. In this paper, we discuss how to improve the quality of postgraduate education from three aspects: postgraduate enrollment, academic level of advisors and instruction methods. Firstly, general characters of good...
This paper presents an in-operation curriculum and its further extension plan of an engineering / science education program that emphasizes “hands-on” research opportunities. The program was specifically created for international exchange undergraduate students who study in Japan. The main designing concept of the program is to nurture creative competency in the undergraduate students by offering...
Generally, the automation operations for cloud management achieved by replacing manual operations with operations using automation tools. The developers of automation scripts often refer to the existing automation scripts so that they can develop new automation scripts by just modifying smaller parts in the existing automation scripts. In order to facilitate the development of automation scripts,...
In this study, we conduct agent-based simulation experiments of network formation focusing on a mathematical model proposed by Berninghaus et al. (2007) such that a periphery sponsored star network is the strict Nash equilibrium. Hayashida et al. (2011) conducted the simulation experiment using NN(Neural Network) and GA(Genetic Algorithm) model to analyze behavior of human subject in the experiment...
This paper presents a successful e-learning experience concerning a practical course in the field of control process. In fact, the student accomplishes the practical course via the web by making measurements, control and supervision in real time through a control bench unit which is installed within the eSience laboratory at the ENET'COM. Using this common hardware/software platform, iLabs can offer...
This paper is dedicated to the presentation of the Tempus project “rESeau maghrébIn de laboratoirEs à distance”, eSience, which aims to create an eLab for the realization of remote practical courses in Maghreb countries (Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia). In this paper, we present a prototype for a remote laboratory for electronics implemented in the National Electronics and Telecommunications school of...
In this paper a special electric transformer which allows achieving multiple polyphase systems (two-phase, five-phase and six-phase) from the three-phase power grid, using different connection schemes, is presented. The purpose of such an electric transformer is to offer the possibility of easily obtain different multiphase electric systems from the available three-phase power system, in electric...
Recent technological trends on mobile/wearable devices and sensors have been enabling increasing number of people to collect and store their “life-logs” easily in their daily lives. Beyond exercise behavior change of individual user, our research focus is on the behavior change of teams, based on life-logging technologies and information sharing. In this paper, we propose and evaluate six different...
During the last decades, different assessment approaches have been implemented in many higher education institutions in order to complement or even substitute the final exams. Here, an analysis of the implementation of a mixed assessment method (continuous assessment plus a final exam) in a Signals and Systems course is presented. The continuous assessment part includes several assessed activities...
This corresponds to the material in the invited keynote presentation by H. J. Siegel, summarizing the research in [1], [2]. We address the problem of assigning dynamically-arriving tasks to machines in a heterogeneous computing environment. These machines execute a workload composed of different tasks, where the tasks have diverse computational requirements. Each task has a utility function associated...
This paper studies the consistency of the extended Kalman filter(EKF) for a general class of nonlinear systems. Based on the EKF algorithm, we propose the CEKF as well as the tuning law for its parameters. The consistency of CEKF is proved. Finally, the feasibility and consistency are illustrated by the numerical simulation for an example system.
