We introduce manylogs, a simple and novel concept of logging that deploys many scattered logs on disk such that small random writes can be appended into any log near the current disk head position (e.g., the location of last large I/O). The benefit is two-fold: the small writes attain fast durability while the large I/Os still sustain large bandwidth.
This paper studies cooperative user positioning using uplink time-difference-of-arrival (UTDOA) measurements for 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) cellular networks. Many applications in a cellular network, such as location-based services and E-911, rely on accurate locations of users in the network. Although the Global Positioning System (GPS) is widely used in cellphones, their poor localization performance...
Cloud computing garners wide use by the information technology industry. Multiple cloud instances can now be configured to synchronize persisted data. Communicating internally and between cloud instances generally requires a modern networking infrastructure. However, some networks are severely constrained by their environments with disruptions, intermittent connectivity, and limited bandwidth. These...
Synchronization of a Wireless Sensor Network is a crucial task and is based on a precise syntonization of all clocks within the network. The synchronization precision is usually closely connected to the positioning accuracy in networks for the purpose of localization. This paper introduces a concept, how the clocks of low-complexity stationary receivers can be adjusted to the same frequency with the...
This paper presents a low power Impulse-Radio Ultra-WideBand (IR-UWB) receiver for low range and low data rates applications. The receiver adopts a non coherent detection with duty cycling that allows very low power consumption. The receiver operates in the high band of the UWB frequency band. It has been designed for the 7.2-8.5GHz bandwidth and covers channels 8, 9, 10, and 11 of the IEEE 802.15...
Reasonable possibility of modem building in the class of non-coherent systems, which is suitable for use in the equipment of standard infrastructure of aviation radiotelephony communication, is described. It comes to standard narrowband analog VHF (Very High Frequency) aeronautical radio channels in the 118–137 MHz band. The flow chart of data communication via the voice path of aeronautical radiostation...
This paper provides an algorithm to estimate long-term-evolution (LTE) network load based on radio frequency (RF) scanner log file containing reference symbols received power (RSRP), reference symbols received quality (RSRQ), and signal to interference noise ratio (SINR) information of the serving cell and the neighbor cells. The estimated load is defined as the utilization of resource elements (RE)...
This paper presents an operating system managed die-stacked DRAM called i-MIRROR that mirrors high locality pages from off-chip DRAM. Optimizing the problems of reducing cache tag area, reducing transfer bandwidth and improving hit latency altogether while using die-stacked DRAM as hardware cache is extremely challenging. In this paper, we show that performance and energy efficiency can be obtained...
Languages and libraries based on the Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS) programming model have emerged in recent years with a focus on addressing the programming challenges for scalable parallel systems. Among these, Coarray Fortran (CAF) is unique in that as it has been incorporated into an existing standard (Fortran 2008), and therefore it is of particular importance that implementations supporting...
To address the generation uncertainty problems introduced by renewable energy power plants, STATCOMs are a typical solution to smoothen the point of common coupling (PCC) voltage in order to facilitate the integration of the renewables. A recently proposed control method — virtual synchronous machine (VSM), which controls grid-interfaced inverters to behave like synchronous machines so as to be more...
The performance of any cooperative task that involves two or more robots will be determined by their capacity to recognize common information of the environment. Vision sensors are very effective for this particular goal, but the cost of transmitting the visual information represents a real issue, even more if communication must be performed in narrow bandwidth networks and/or over a multi-hop path...
We propose receiver architecture for FTN signaling transmission in the DVB-S2 standard. Typically, ISI- free condition has been assumed for DVB-S2 receiver design when satellite transponder model is absent. However, it's necessary to modify the receiver for FTN signaling since ISI becomes major issue. In this work, we take into account an example model as complete receiver for FTN signaling in DVB-S2...
A large flow three position four-way cartridge servo valve formed by a number of parallel cartridge two-way servo valves is designed to deal with the contradiction between large flow and high-frequency of the electro-hydraulic servo valve. A cross-coupled synchronization fuzzy control based on synchronization error of double valve is proposed to solve the asynchronization problem during the working...
In this paper, we present a compilation flow for HPC kernels on the REDEFINE coarse-grain reconfigurable architecture (CGRA). REDEFINE is a scalable macro-dataflow machine in which the compute elements (CEs) communicate through messages. REDEFINE offers the ability to exploit high degree of coarse-grain and pipeline parallelism. The CEs in REDEFINE are enhanced with reconfigurable macro data-paths...
We discuss the use of a metric based on the amplitude variation of a channel in the signal bandwidth to predict whether or not a digital wireless communication test system receiver will be able to demodulate a test signal. This metric is compared to another method consisting of the correlation calculated across the channel. A logistic regression analysis is used to provide a normalized assessment...
An adjustable pulse bandwidth single carrier waveform for asynchronous low-cost low-power 5G M2M applications is proposed. The solution uses ultra narrow-band pulse to improve coverage, which is a much more efficient coverage enhancement solution than existing repetition solutions. Frequency localized pulse shaping is used, which allows asynchronous transmission and packing more machine-type devices...
By utilizing the channel bandwidth in a pre-assigned time slot, TDMA is very useful to communicate voice and data for small group. It also provides the increased battery life by transmitting data in an assigned slot. Instead of two party communications, it can be applied to multiparty communications. This paper presents a design of the TDMA baseband modem to support multiparty voice communications...
Synchronization in lithographic wafer scanners involves a wafer-to-reticle stage controller. However, in view of the increasing wafer stage bandwidths the need for an additional reticle-to-wafer stage controller becomes more evident, i.e. a cross-coupling controller. By itself, this has severe implications for the stability and control design of the synchronized system, which becomes multivariable...
Mobile devices in industrial settings became commonplace with different handheld equipment and mobile robots using COTS WiFi interfaces for communication. This growth in the use of the wireless medium increases the potential for overload and consequent long delays and high losses. Traffic segregation with different Quality of Service (QoS) classes can attenuate the problem but does not solve it within...
The data acquisition system is an important way to obtain the original information, and it's an indispensable part of data receiving and analysis system. At present, with the improvement of bus technology and the level of devices internal integration technology, data acquisition technology is developing towards high-speed and multi-channel. High speed data acquisition has become one of the key factors...
