A novel solution is proposed for joint intra/inter-domain signaling crankback for multidomain DWDM lightpath setup. The scheme leverages existing intra/inter-domain routing protocol state and provides mechanisms to track signaling failures and limit setup overheads and delays.
Two GMPLS restoration strategies operating at wavelength and link granularities are experimentally validated in a multi-domain WSON. The strategies are qualitatively compared in terms of resource usage, restorability and restoration time.
New routing metric is proposed for Optical burst switching (OBS) networks taking into account some optical parameters as number of channels, load and link bandwidth. Also path delay is taken into account for best serving real time dependant applications. The results show better routing decisions than link bandwidth dependent routing metrics leading to lower BLR by more than 22% in some topologies...
While transparent optical networks become more and more popular as the basis of the next generation Internet (NGI) infrastructure, such networks raise many security issues, which do not exist in traditional optoelectronic networks. The existing protection schemes which rely heavily on fault detection with the use of network monitoring performed by optoelectronic conversion at the switching nodes,...
In IP-over-WDM networks, wavelength circuits are often protected by dedicated backup circuits. Especially with future deployment of 100 G transmission systems, there will be huge under-utilization of backup resources. Network utilization can be boosted by loaning the idle backup circuits to preemptible IP/packet services. In the event of a failure, IP traffic can be pre-empted and wavelength backup...
Two multi-layer network backup capacity recovery mechanisms, which are static and dynamic mechanisms, have been proposed to realize survivability strategy in IP over WDM multi-layer network. Compared with the static one, the dynamic backup capacity mechanism is adopted as its flexibility which is more suitable for the development in the current network. To achieve better performance of resource utilization,...
Protected circuits provisioning on an optical network based on ROADMs is demonstrated using a GMPLS control plane with physical impairments considerations (link attenuation and PMD). Therefore, messages exchanged between nodes related to signaling procedures and topological data flooding were altered, in order to carry the necessary information for WDM network control. To operate properly, a RWA algorithm...
Exploring the use of all-optical MEM switches on local area network (LAN) to increase bandwidth and reduce energy cost has received increasing attention. Compared to traditional electronic switches, an all-optical switch provides higher bandwidth, less energy cost and cheaper wiring. Once the optical port count per switch becomes a resource constraint, an all-optical switched core can change the network...
In this paper, we propose to apply multipath routing in optical networks for the emerging high-performance applications with extremely high bandwidth requirements, typically larger than the capacity of one wavelength. To this end, we present a novel Multipath lightpath Provisioning mechanism and derive an optimal solution by an ILP (Integer Linear Programming) approach, with differential delay and...
Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching (GMPLS) based optical networks are viewed as a promising network infrastructure for the next generation network (NGN) development. By pre-configuring the resources of dynamic optical networks, we can reconstruct the physical topology, thus increase the number of direct routes between potentially heavily loaded physical node pairs and optimize the performance...
The hierarchical routing and wavelength assignment problem in Automatic Switched Optical Network (ASON) is researched. Based on our analysis, three adaptive algorithms called MLLR (Multi-Layer Least Loaded Routing Algorithm), WMLCR (Wavelength-graph-based Multi-Layer Least Congestion Routing Algorithm) and BMR (Backtracking-based Multi-Layer Routing Algorithm) are proposed. A platform named AHORSP...
IP over WDM is a promising architecture for the next generation Internet (NGI) backbones. Traffic engineering (TE) for next generation multimedia services is a new challenge for multilayer co-operation within these communication networks. In MPLS/GMPLS based IP over WDM networks, the TE process is accomplished by the establishment of an adequate logical topology, above the underlying optical topology...
Photonic networks-on-chip have emerged as a viable solution for interconnecting multicore computer architectures in a power-efficient manner. Current architectures focus on large messages, however, which are not compatible with the coherence traffic found on chip multiprocessor networks. In this paper, we introduce a reconfigurable optical interconnect in which the topology is adapted automatically...
The amount of spare capacity for restoration is usually calculated using network design tools. This task depends on the detailed information about the network topology and traffic model. In order to allow a preliminary evaluation of the networks, we propose an approximation to estimate the spare capacity required to a mesh network recover from any single link failure. The expression is based on statistical...
We present a k-shortest path algorithm for overlay demand routing in optical networks. The proposed algorithm can find paths in trap topologies and show higher demand routing success rate compared to shortest path algorithm-based approaches.
Architecture of DREAMSCAPE is introduced into optical networks combined with ASON/GMPLS, and a selection scheme is proposed for group engine (GE) and unit engine (UE). Then the cooperation relationship of modules in GE and the verification platform are described.
The hierarchical routing infrastructure in automatic switched optical network (ASON) is researched. Three operational algorithms MLLR (multi-layer least loaded routing algorithm), MLCR (multi-layer least congestion routing algorithm) and MROB (multi-layer routing algorithm based on backtracking) are proposed. In these algorithms, the resource coordination and balancing of multi-domain and multilayer...
This paper addresses offline virtual topology design in transparent optical networks under given periodic traffic. We call this planning problem ldquoScheduled Virtual Topology Designrdquo. Two problem variants are considered: for a network based on non-reconfigurable equipment and for a network based on reconfigurable equipment. Two MILP (Mixed Integer Linear Program) formulations are proposed, one...
Fully-transparent DWDM networks working at 10 Gb/s or more have limited reach. At these high rates, only translucent networks able to fully regenerate the signal when needed can be used to implement long haul transport networks. Since signal regeneration and regenerator placement can be done in many ways, an effective design procedure will target the overall cost minimization. In this paper, we propose...
We propose a linear formulation for traffic routing in optical networks after the virtual topology design (VTD). The formulation maximizes the amount of traffic the network is able to accept, through minimizing the residual capacity in established lightpaths. The results suggest that it is feasible to preserve enough open capacity to avoid disruption of connections and blocking of future traffic demands...
