This paper presents an experimental comparison between a Direct Matrix Converter and an Indirect Matrix Converter in terms of semiconductor devices thermal cycling. Both converters have been designed and built using SiC MOSFETs; the Indirect Matrix Converter has also been tested using a hybrid solution with Silicon IGBT on the input stage and SiC MOSFETs on the output stage.
Z-source inverter is a power electronic converter with potential applications in areas like renewable energy, electric vehicles, etc. because unlike traditional inverters, it can provide a boost in output voltage without any additional DC-DC boost converter stage in between the DC source and inverter. This feature is particularly useful if the input DC source is of low voltage like battery or of fluctuating...
This paper presents a hybrid single-phase inverter based on a modular multilevel cascade converter (MMCC) with double-star chopper cells (DSCC). The proposed inverter is constituted by one five-level (5L) DSCC leg and one two-level (2L) leg, providing a nine-level voltage at its output. For this, a hybrid modulation technique is employed, allowing the DSCC leg to operate at the switching frequency...
A multilevel soft-switching DC-DC converter with only one resonant cell for medium voltage conversion is proposed in this paper. Two control strategies for the converter are analyzed and compared. For the proposed converter, all dc capacitors can achieve voltage self-balanced under open loop control. All switches and diodes operate in soft-switching condition without sacrificing reliability. Finally,...
Power density and efficiency are important metrics for power converters in many applications including renewable energy interface. Combined with the desire to replace the bulky, unreliable electrolytic dc link capacitors with film or ceramic capacitors due to reliability concerns, this has led to the trend of allowing increasingly higher double line frequency dc link voltage ripple. This paper discusses...
This paper deals with the fault tolerance analysis applied to the converter topology 5-level unidirectional T-Rectifier (5L T-RECT) to be used for electric generating applications. The proposed generating unit is intended for aerospace applications with high fundamental electric frequency, to this purpose the investigated power electronic converter configuration is able to supply power to the electric...
This paper presents a tutorial guide for the systematic design of ΣΔ Modulators-from system-level specifications to circuit-level design and silicon implementation. The whole design flow is outlined and illustrated by several case studies and chip examples intended for reconfigurable ADCs in multi-standard wireless telecom systems1.
This paper investigates an optimum control strategy for an isolated dual-active-bridge DC/DC converter based on MMC (Modular Multilevel Converter) technology. The control goal is to achieve minimal current magnitude for given power transfer and to provide fast control for full positive and negative power range. The control strategy is derived in the rotating dq frame. The optimal operation is achieved...
In the framework of the development of pulsed klystron modulators for particle accelerators, this paper presents a complete study of a novel hybrid topology of a bouncer circuit used to compensate the voltage droop of the main capacitor bank. This topology allows to merge the advantages of the open loop passive L-C resonant bouncer topology with an active linear bouncer one. The resulting performances...
Stangenes Industries has developed a solid-state inductor-driven kicker magnet pulse generator for use in a particle accelerator application. The system operates in a neutron environment which precludes the use of standard capacitor-driven systems. A 500–700 A pulse is produced by switching high-current through a large 360 μH inductor from the circuit return into a 6.5 μH kicker magnet. The DC magnetic...
The European Spallation Source (Lund, Sweden) is an under construction multi-disciplinary research facility to be based around a Linear Particle Accelerator which is to provide 2.86 ms long proton pulses at 2 GeV at a pulse repetition rate of 14 Hz, representing an average beam power of 5 MW. To accommodate the requirements of the proton linac, a large number of klystrons driven by power electronic...
For LED-based transmitters used in optical wireless transmissions, the relationship between the input voltage and the output light intensity of an LED is nonlinear. Hence, voltage modulation cannot be used directly on an LED for continuous modulation such as OFDM without signal distortion. Compared to voltage modulation with a predistortion circuit, current modulation is simpler to apply since the...
This paper proposes a new 9-level stacked inverter for a symmetric six phase induction motor with low voltage devices using a single DC link. The six phase inverter is developed using 2 three phase 9-level stacked inverters. Each of these three phase stacked inverter is developed by stacking two 5-level inverters. The three phase 9-level inverter needs two DC sources for its operation. All the capacitors...
HVDC transmission systems based on voltage source converters have lately emerged as a good alternative to conventional AC transmission. In these transmission systems multilevel converters have become a promising energy conversion technology. The reliability of the power converters are extremely important since a fault in these equipments may lead to an unavailability for a long period of the transmission...
This paper presents a single-phase seven-level stack multicell converter (SMC) which provides a viable solution for multilevel converter. Conventional cascaded multilevel inverter (MLI) removes the drawbacks of clamping diodes and clamping capacitors topologies. However, in a cascaded MLI number of voltage source and power switches increases as the number of level increases. The main advantage of...
Being an “All Silicon Solution”, Matrix Converter (MC) has become main interest of researchers as a possible substitute of back to back (B2B) connected converter topology with dc link storage. Lack of dc storage element is a main attractive feature of MC converter topology which can make it suitable choice for many traditional B2B converter topology dominated applications. In this paper, Space Vector...
In recent years, photovoltaic systems designers have been started to pay attention in transformerless multilevel inverter topologies. This is due to they possess several advantages, such as, high efficiency, good performance, multiple voltage output levels and small size. In order to meet the safety requirement for transformerless grid-tied photovoltaic inverters, the leakage current has to be tackled...
In this paper a comparative evaluation of the efficiency for two multilevel topologies used in grid-connected transformer-less applications is presented. The proposed analysis is focused in two of the most important characteristics in grid-connected converters, such as the leakage currents which appear between the stray capacitances and the ground path and the efficiency. The efficiency evaluation...
This paper presents a reduced-order generalized average model for a grid-connected High-Frequency-link micro-inverter for renewable energy sources applications; the grid-connected topology is based on the DC/DC Dual-Active-Bridge (DAB) converter without the intermediate DC-link. The switched model for the system is presented and from it the reduced-order generalized average model is obtained. Harmonic...
This study presents a novel inverter with high voltage gain based on asymmetrical Γ-Z-source topology. It employs one diode, one inductor and two capacitors more than the basic structure that obtains higher output voltage with reduced duty ratio. So, a reasonable modulation ratio is needed to gain desired boost factor which improves the network power quality. In this structure, unlike other Z-source...
