The study is part of hydromycological investigations of man-affected water bodies in Olsztyn. Our results show that yeast-like fungi are permanent components in three selected lakes (lakes Tursko, Długie and Skanda). Their abundance and species composition depend on the trophic state of each lake.
Studies on parasitism in zooplankton and periphyton assemblages were carried out on samples of water collected from Lakes Płociczno and Płociowe in the Drawa National Park in 2008-2011. Occurrence of the fungal mycobiotal and protozoan parasites of invertebrates was recorded in both lakes. Parasitism of Chydorus sp. (Cladocera) by Saprolegnia sp. occurred on 0.8% of individuals of the host population,...
In summer 2007 water samples were collected in three lakes situated in the region of the Great Mazurian Lakes (northeastern Poland) displaying different types of catchment area: Lake Niegocin, Lake Piłwąg and Lake Rekąty. The main objective of this study was to analyze the difference in species composition of cyanobacteria and to determine the concentration of cyanotoxins. Potentially toxic species...
Prokaryotes from different phylogenetic groups were studied in surface microlayer (SM, up to 100 μm) and subsurface water (SW – 20 cm) in a eutrophic lake over three months (July, August, and October). The abundance of prokaryotes was determined by epifluorescence microscopy after DAPI staining, and phylogenetic diversity was determined by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with group-specific,...
This research was undertaken in order to determine and analyze various heavy metals present in sediments taken from Lake Donghu. Six heavy metals: arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) were determined by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICPAES). Relative enrichment factors and potential ecological risk indexes were used to study the...
In this study, wastes and minerals were incorporated into the production of bricks as a kind of waterpurifying substrate. The brick contained 72% clay, 10% bagasse, 10% steel slag, 5% zeolite, and 3% calcite by weight. The brick exhibited highly and hierarchically porous structure. It can remove phosphate and ammonium simultaneously from aqueous solutions with the maximum adsorption amount of 3.8...
