Alaska's Kenai fisheries are managed for maximum efficiency while ensuring fair allocation across multiple stakeholder groups and long term sustainability of the fishery. Managers must work to meet the fishery's goals while adapting their commercial and subsistence eco-service management practices to meet changing ecological conditions. Pre- and in-season fishery management practices are supported...
Considering the cultural background of users is known to improve recommender systems for multimedia items. In this work, we focus on music and analyze user demographics and music listening events in a large corpus (120,000 users, 109 events) from Last.fm to investigate whether similarity between countries in terms of cultural and socio-economic factors is reflected in music taste. To this end, we...
Merging gene expression datasets is a simple way to increase the number of samples in an analysis. However experimental and data processing conditions, which are proper to each dataset or batch, generally influence the expression values and can hide the biological effect of interest. It is then important to normalize the bigger merged dataset, as failing to adjust for those batch effects may adversely...
We present the results of an experiment to assess the validity of prior polarities available in sentiment lexicons. We designed a ranking task that was elicited through pairwise comparisons and compared the results to those predicted by two popular sentiment lexicons. We find that the experiment results show a moderate level of agreement between the lexicons and human judgments.
It is critical to be able to identify longitudinally changing genes in temporal data so that studies can be focused on how gene expression changes in a dynamic way. While biological networks continue to play a significant role in modeling and characterizing complex relationships in biological systems, most network modeling studies in biomedical research focus on snapshot or “static” network-based...
Order-batching is a common practice in orderpicking» which can reduce the total picking time if the orders have many relevant in Multi-Shuttle Warehouse System. In this paper, the performance of different order-batching methods that are made up of one seed-order selection rule and one accompanying-order selection rule is investigated. A seed-order selection rule selects the first order (i.e. the seed...
We study the problem of approximating the partition function of the ferromagnetic Ising model in graphs and hypergraphs. Our first result is a deterministic approximation scheme (an FPTAS) for the partition function in bounded degree graphs that is valid over the entire range of parameters β (the interaction) and λ (the external field), except for the case |λ|=1 (the...
The perfect Gaussian integer sequences, which satisfy the ideal periodic autocorrelation functions, are of practical interest in both orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems and code division multiple access (CDMA) systems. In this work, we propose an infinity family of the perfect Gaussian integer sequences constructed from a multiple of the original Payne's o-polynomial. Experimental...
Correlation clustering is a NP-hard problem, and for large graphs finding even just a good approximation of the optimal solution is a hard task. In previous articles we have suggested a contraction method and its divide and conquer variant. In this article we present several improvements of this method (preprocessing, quasi-parallelism, etc.) and prepare it for parallelism. Based on speed tests we...
Experiential attributes are a possible way of explaining user's experiences during interaction. Recently presented set of 23 aesthetic categories of interaction was established with a purpose to explain users' aesthetic experiences. This recent work focused on touch devices, such as smartphones and tablets, and concluded with the need to study further the goodness of established categories. The study,...
In this paper we present a correlation between a variation of the list problem coloring in graphs, the (γ, μ)-coloring, and the property of choosability in graphs, resulting in the k-(γ, μ)-choosability. The list coloring problem is a variation of the classical vertex coloring problem, introduced by Erdos et al. in 1979, along with a property very studied in list coloring: the choosability in graphs...
Non-linear methods are usually used to analyze and process random sequences with outliers or in presence of impulsive noise. One of these methods is based on order statistics, which includes rank information by increasing the problem size. In this article we use a rank one quadratic measurement model based on sketches and apply it to order statistics. We introduce a method to estimate the correlation...
Despite of the popularity of activity-based travel behavior analysis, there is few studies taking the other peoples' travel behavior from neighboring household into model specification, and the effects of the socio-demographic and environmental determinants on different members in the same household are ignored. Using the data from 2013 Nanjing Resident Travel Survey, this paper applied the spatial...
In this paper, model order reduction is considered for externally positive systems. Since to verify external positivity of a given transfer function is NP-hard, an externally finitely positive system is introduced as an extension of an externally positive system. It is shown that the externally finitely positive system is useful for model order reduction of externally positive systems, where the q-Markov...
The existing constructions of Golay complementary sets based on generalized Boolean functions are limited to lengths, which are powers of two. In a recent paper, Chen [3] proposed a new construction of binary and nonbinary complementary sets of non-power-of-two length based on truncated method. In this paper, we proposed a novel construction of ç-ary complementary sets based on the concatenation of...
This paper presents two constructions of Gaussian integer Z-periodic complementary sequence (ZPCS) sets. Construction I employs a ZPCS set as the original sequence set, however, the parameters of the resultant sequence sets cannot be flexibly chosen. Construction II generates Gaussian integer ZPCS sets using an orthogonal matrix, the ZCZ length and the flock size have flexible choices. The sequences...
In this paper, asymmetric binary zero correlation zone (A-ZCZ) sequence sets are constructed. Based on zero correlation zone aperiodic complementary sequence (ZACS) sets obtained in [13], K binary ZCZ sequence sets are constructed, each set is a binary (2M2, M, M)-ZCZ and the K sets have a inter-set zero cross-correlation zone of length Z = M/K − 1, where K = pn. As a result, the K binary ZCZ sequence...
In this paper, we give a construction of optimal sets of N-ary perfect sequences of period N, where N a positive odd integer. For this, we first re-define generators, perfect generators, and optimal generators which were originally defined for odd prime lengths by Park, Song, Kim, and Golomb in 2016. Based on this, we propose a construction of optimal generators of odd lengths by using optimal generators...
Pseudorandom number generators are required to generate pseudorandom numbers which have not only good statistical properties but also unpredictability in cryptography. A geometric sequence is a sequence given by applying a nonlinear feedforward function to an m-sequence. Nogami, Tada and Uehara proposed a geometric sequence whose nonlinear feedforward function is given by the Legendre symbol, and...
This paper shows some of fundamental properties of Z4 sequences of combining each element of a preferred pair of binary m-sequences by using the Gray code mapping. The distribution of elements {0,1,2,3} within one period can be exactly derived from auto/cross-correlation values of Gold sequences or Gold-like sequences. In addition, this paper shows properties such that the Z4 sequences have near-optimum...
