In this paper we present an algorithm that help blind and visually impaired people to navigate through urban environments by detecting pedestrian crosswalks. In addition to detecting the presence of a crosswalk, its orientation and position respected to the camera is also determined to help the approach of intersections and traversing them.
An architecture for speech- and auditory cue-based route instructions is introduced in the paper. The server side architecture is composed of a set of web services. The architecture allows connecting different route services behind a single interface. The route instructions can be transferred as recorded speech, vibration patterns, auditory cues and in textual form between the server and client side...
With the development of advanced human-machine interface, effective information processing algorithms, and more powerful microprocessors, it is possible to enable the blind to achieve additional perception of the environment. In 1970s, the blind-assistant facility based on sensory substitution was introduced. It called as ETA (short for Electronic Travel Aids), bases on the other natural senses of...
This keynote paper discusses the problem of outdoor mobility of the visually impaired and reviews key assistive technologies aiding the blind in independent travel. Space perception abilities important for mobility of the visually impaired are discussed first and related definitions and basic concepts such as: cognitive mapping, wayfinding and navigation are explained. The main mobility barriers the...
With improvement and development of network education, old people in expanding number take part in e_learning, then accessibility design and development of learning website for old people causes concern. website accessibility design guidelines are of significant importance in accessibility design and development of learning website for old people. Based on foreign accessibility guidelines of website...
Considering the design of inclusive interfaces of static and dynamic Web pages, this work focuses on the group of users with cognitive/intellectual disabilities, while simultaneously accounting for the needs of users with mobility and sensory deficits. A number of specific universal design principles are derived from a variety of cognitive disabilities, such as problems with linguistics (text and...
We present a light-weight, cheap and low-power, wearable system for assisting the visually impaired in performing routine mobility tasks. Our system extends the range of the white cane by providing the user with vibro-tactile cues corresponding to the location of obstacles and a safe path for traversal through a cluttered environment. The presented approach keeps cognitive load to a minimum, and while...
Most electronic travel aids for the visually impaired and blind persons use voice instruction to inform the device users of the distance to the destination. However, presentation method of voice instruction have not been designed by taking into account the specific characteristics of human cognition, and so users sometimes would be confused. Then, in this paper, we would like to investigate optimal...
In order to allow severely disabled people who cannot move their arms and legs to steer an automated wheelchair, this work proposes the combination of a non-invasive EEG-based human-robot interface and an autonomous navigation system that safely executes the issued commands. The robust classification of steady-state visual evoked potentials in brain activity allows for the seamless projection of qualitative...
Although accessible pedestrian signals are more and more frequent at crosswalks in busy intersections, visually impaired people will not be able to get about independently until the infrastructure reaches full coverage on the routes they are using. In this paper, we present algorithms to detect and recognize pedestrian crosswalks developed in the framework of the research to create a Bionic Eyeglass,...
The visitor has visual disability, which will greatly restrict their access to network information. This paper will discuss the factors and strategies of accessible network information environment design which can include visual disability visitors, to achieve the goal of designing the accessible network, set up a relatively fair network information environment.
Efforts have been made on voice enabled navigation, but to use the voice enabled systems more effectively, we need to exploit the marvels of web semantics properly, especially with the aspect of blind. Voice enabled applications have already been introduced by several companies but "Voice Enabled Browsing" is an area yet to be discovered. In this study we focused on the use of voice browsing...
In our everyday lives the fundamental role played by sensory systems, such as vision, hearing, and touch, is often taken for granted. Most of the information for the cognitive mapping of spaces used by people who are sighted is gathered through the visual channel. Unfortunately, people who are blind or have low vision lack the ability to collect the required visual information either in advance or...
The paper presents initial research on the system for remote guidance of the blind. The concept is based on the idea that a blind pedestrian can be aided by spoken instructions from an operator who receives a video stream from a camera carried by the visually impaired user. An early prototype utilizing two laptop PCs and a wireless Internet connection is used in orientation and mobility trials, which...
