The turbulent flow past a circular cylinder has been studied extensively by previous researchers due to its importance in many engineering applications. In particular, the wave run-up is one of the most significant design factors when offshore structures are operated. In this paper, the wave run-up height and depression depth around a vertical circular cylinder were numerically investigated. The commercial...
Accurate tidal in-stream energy resource estimation is very important for planning purposes. Hydrodynamic simulations using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is commonly employed in the assessment of candidate sites for tidal energy extraction. The estimated energy of a site using simulations may vary as certain CFD parameters change. This work studies the effects of varying grid size (x, y, and...
CFD method and ICEM FLUENT commercial software were used to do numerical simulation of three-dimensional flow in the updraft free-exit-flow hydropower turbine system. The time-averaged Navier-Stokes equations were used in the calculation, standard k-ε turbulent model and SIMPLEC algorithm were chosen for the simulation, it provides pressure and velocity vector distribution inside the spiral-case and...
The existing and mature CFD technology is applied in this paper. Through the simulation of the prototype, it's found that there are obvious vortices in the cochlea part of the centrifugal multi-wing type ventilator. Two schematic plans are adopt to improve efficiency of the centrifugal multi-wing type ventilator. These vortices can cause high energy loss. At the same time, they increase noise of the...
In this study, CFD simulations are utilized to perform flow visualization, torque calculation, efficiency estimation, and noise analysis. For demonstration purpose, an 80 mm-diameter backward-inclined (BI) centrifugal fan is chosen to serve as the research subject. The result indicates that the P-Q curve and the sound pressure level (SPL) spectrum of the experiment are in agreement with those of numerical...
In this paper, the flow around a single foil has been simulated. Effort has been made to search for better ways for imposing the interface conditions of the multi-mesh system and partial slip condition on the foil wall. Simulated results are compared with the available experimental measurement. The features of present approach of the large eddy simulation for flow around foil is discussed.
