This work objectively proposes and describes the development project of a Charpy Pendulum Testing Machine, which is a low-cost tool designed for the academic environment. The tool has been developed to be used in laboratories that perform mechanical tests of impact and also as a result of an important partnership between students and researchers from UMC and EPUSP.
This chapter examines and comments on a brief teaching experiment in which fifth graders explored levers. The teacher–researcher employed modeling instruction (Hestenes, 1996), an inquiry based pedagogical approach that is widely utilized in high school physics instruction. The method relies on collaborative meaning making by students who work together in small groups on laboratory exercises or problems,...
Model-driven engineering is constantly gaining importance, expanding to domains varying from the Web to the 3D graphics. Domain-specific languages besides contributing to the development process can be used in a didactic process conducted not only in schools. Thus this paper introduces new domain-specific language and discusses its usage in teaching construction of shaders and materials while working...
Virtualizing the educational contents and resources as well as conceptual entities would form VOs and CVOs for WoO paltform. which provides dynamicity and intelligence through composition and collaboration for self-directed learning in smart learning environment. Semantic ontology in WoO platform supports dynamic composition and collaboration among objects, VO and CVO, for intelligent learning model...
Etextbooks offer the potential to change the way faculty teach and students learn. One approach to providing etextbooks enables faculty to custom tailor traditional "flat" paper textbooks from major publishers by embedding videos and annotating them with comments. We conducted a lab study in which participants read a chapter in a computer networking book either in paper form, or using an...
IT systems are, without a doubt, fundamental to almost all facets of modern life, including government operations, commerce and manufacturing, financial systems, education, communications, energy production and distribution, and transportation. However, given the global connectedness of such systems, they are under constant attack from a variety of actors ranging from automated malware and so-called...
This paper proposes an education assistive technology system based on a graphic haptic electronic board for improving the effects of education for the visually impaired in a special education environment for both low-vision and blind students. The system comprises of authoring and teaching SW for educators, viewer SW for students with low vision, and graphic haptic electronic board HW for blind students...
Developing the creativity of vocational high school students has become critical recently, particularly for mechanical engineering students. The goal of this study was to determine the relationships among factors of “school”, “family”, “intention”, “experience”, and “performance”. Results showed that “experience” moderated the relationship between “intention” and “performance”. Furthermore, “intention”...
Women in Australia continue to be under-represented in the engineering profession particularly in electrical engineering. Attracting students of both genders into engineering by relying on the traditional funnel management approach is inadequate. The focus of this paper is based on the experience of the School of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications at the University of New South Wales in...
Constructive alignment combines constructive learning theories with aligned curriculum to promote deep learning. Using an action research methodology, this work reflects upon twelve iterations, over 6-years, of a project that aimed to implement constructive alignment using portfolio assessment for teaching introductory programming. Student results and staff reflections are used to highlight factors...
Nowadays, Web-based learning become one of the most important components in educational technologies and has been widely employed in both educational and non-educational institutions. However, many of the Web-based learning systems are closed system and use private internal format. The learning materials may be dispersed and stored in database or on the server's file system, therefore the learning...
Although flipping classroom is not a new idea in education, implementing flipped class is somewhat a new trend. Flipping classrooms involve students in using their textbooks, online materials, and other useful resources before coming to class. Consequently, students can spend valuable class meetings on problem-solving activities instead of lectures. Positive feedback from utilizing the flipped classroom...
There is a high demand from academic centers, business firms and marketplaces for highly qualified expertise in database areas. As a result, it is undoubtedly fundamental for academic researchers in the field of databases and education to conduct more research works so that to enhance teaching, learning, and assessing methods of database courses. This paper describes the salient features of these...
This paper aims to explore the impact of lecture capture technology on lecturers and teaching at an Australian university. The data was collected from lecturers in engineering, management, and nursing disciplines. Results of the survey and interviews indicated conformity with previous studies on the importance of teachers' value beliefs in their effort to integrate educational technology in teaching...
Rapid advances in technology, economic globalization require engineering education to design itself towards an outcome based education module. This article reviews the current structure of teaching quality evaluation practices conducted in engineering institutes of Pakistan and focuses on the development of a meaningful Systematic Evaluation of Teaching that would generate meaningful feedback for...
This work examined the use of self-made YouTube videos by lecturers in teaching Mathematics. A few studies have emphasized the importance of bringing YouTube in the classroom. A lecturer may use YouTube videos available on Internet or create his own videos as teaching materials. The purpose of this work is to study students' perceptions and preferences between these two options. A sample of 213 first...
The demographics of the modern day student (shorter attention span, multimodal access to learning resources, growing reliance on technology) and highlighted concerns of the traditional teaching methods, such as a lecture, demonstrate a need for a more innovative teaching practice. The traditional lecture in higher education is often delivered in single-directional ‘transmission’ style with the information...
Along with the trend of computer technology, programming skill becomes the core competency of the future world, which highlights the importance of programming education. However, most of the related literature indicated that programming is difficult to be tackled for both learners who learn it and teachers who teach it. Despite of the importance, there are only a few cases in which teachers adopt...
As a result of the war situation in Syria, several private universities had to completely close their campuses and move into safer places inside the capital city Damascus. This huge step made it possible to keep the educational process going on at these universities. However, in the new places even small tasks like commuting and distributing the course materials were still challenging. To address...
In different forms of educational learning, student engagement was very important. Many research papers had focused on one teaching method to increase learning and the lecturer tasks were not grouped. This paper presents a framework, Integrated Student-Lecturer Engagement Design Framework (ISLEDF) that uses many in and outside classroom student engagement activities and teaching techniques to promote...
