To cover a so-called terahertz gap in available sources of coherent electromagnetic radiation, the gyrotron with a pulsed solenoid producing up to 50 T magnetic field has been designed, manufactured and tested. At 38.5 T magnetic field, the gyrotron generated coherent radiation at 1.022 THz frequency with pulse duration about 50 microseconds. The microwave power and energy per pulse were about 5.3...
Summary form only given. Researchers at the Russian Academy of Science (RAS) have reported achieving unique advances in the capabilities of gyrotrons. In 1983, by employing pulsed magnets with fields up to 27 Tesla, they achieved gyrotron output power ~100 kW in 80 ms pulses at several fixed frequencies in the range 375-650 GHz; at 500 GHz the gyrotron efficiency was 8%. More recently, in 2008, using...
Several magnetron injection gun cathodes have been measured for temperature and emission uniformity. The measurements confirm results in Russia that the quality of many MIG cathodes is not sufficient for efficient gyrotron operation. This presentation will present recent cathode measurements and identify known issues. A design will be presented that provides a solution for several of these issues.
The torus window, which was manufactured for injection of up to 1 MW mm-wave power at 4 selected frequencies between 105 - 140 GHz into the plasma of ASDEX Upgrade, works on the principle of a double disk arrangement of two large area CVD diamond disks. The thickness of the two disks was 1.8 mm as this fulfils the resonant disc condition and thus provides low reflection at the frequency range limits...
The history of gyrotron development, the principles of gyrotron operation, and possible ways to enhance the power level to increase the operating frequency of gyrotrons are outlined. The state of the art of gyrotrons, their present and possible applications, and perspectives on gyrotrons are considered.<<ETX>>
