Er3+-acticated silica-hafnia glass-ceramic waveguides were fabricated by bottom-up and top-down approaches. The pros and cons of the procedures in terms of optical, spectroscopic and structural properties are reported, in particular regarding attenuation coefficient, NIR emission, and local environment for the rare-earth ions. The results confirm the significance of SiO2-HfO2 glass ceramic waveguides...
Sol-gel route is employed to prepare three nanostructured systems, namely core-shell Er3+-activated silica particles, Er3+-activated silica inverse opal; and spherical microresonators coated by Er3+-activated silica-hafnia film. Fabrication protocol, morphology, and spectroscopic assessment are presented. All the structures exhibit high compositional homogeneity leading to a significant 4I13/2 luminescence...
We have designed a novel Spot-Size converter (SSC) which is constructed with a tapered silicon waveguide and an overlaid rectangular sol-gel hybrid SiO2 waveguide. Simulation analysis based on the three-dimensional beam propagation method (3D-BPM) shows the conversion efficiency can be up to 95% (loss of 0.22 dB).
This paper presents optical and spectroscopic assessment, as well as morphological and structural characterization of nanoscaled photonic structures: (i) rare earth-activated oxide and fluoride glass ceramics planar waveguides; (ii) Er3+-activated micro-nano silica spheres and core-shell-like structures; (iii) rf sputtering-fabricated planar microcavities.
An efficient fabrication scheme of directional coupler (DC) optical waveguide devices is demonstrated using a direct ultraviolet imprinting (DUI) technique in sol-gel derived inorganic 0.2GeO2:0.8SiO2 slab waveguide. The slab waveguide has a ~3-mum-thick photosensitive inorganic 0.2GeO2:0.8SiO2 film which is prepared by the sol-gel spin-coating technique on (10 mum) SiO2-Si substrate. This inorganic...
Multi-layer buried channel waveguides were fabricated using sol-gel derived photopatternable organic-inorganic hybrid materials through multi-step spin coating and photolithography. A single mode circular waveguide at 1550 nm was designed and fabricated using core and cladding coatings with refractive indices of 1.508 and 1.504, respectively. Waveguide thermal stability and thermo-optic coefficient...
