Metal bioavailability is a key factor in risk assessment procedures for contaminated sites. The goal of our study was to evaluate metal bioavailability and toxicity in long-term contaminated soils in the Tarnowskie Gory area of the Silesia region of Poland. Forty diverse soils were collected throughout the study area. Metal availability was measured using neutral salt extractions, a sequential extraction...
Two plant species growing on calamine spoils (vicinity of Olkusz, S. Poland) were examined for their ability to accumulate metals. The plants in these pilot studies were Biscutella laevigata L., a rare plant that occurs in lowlands on zinc-lead mine spoils only in the vicinity of Olkusz, and Plantago lanceolata L. which is a common species in Poland. Concentrations of alkaline metals (Ca, K, Mg) and...
Environmental monitoring of selected metals was performed using biota and soil samples. Sampling was carried out during the period March-May and October-November. For the isolation of these analytes, conventional extraction and microwave mineralization techniques were applied. Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) equipped with Graphite Furnace (GF) was used to determine heavy metals and macroelements...
In the paper the studies of the level of some gamma radioactive elements and heavy metals in fruit, vegetables and plants from Lublin town agglomeration are presented. Potassium 40K isotope was the most of all in the examined samples. It concentrated mainly in overground parts of some vegetables, for example in parsley and carrots haulm and in leaves of red beet and leek (from 1135 to 1940 Bq/kg)...
The concentrations of gamma emitters in grass samples of central-eastern Poland have been determined. The transfer factors for Cs-137 were calculated for particular samples. The effects of soil type, location of the sampling points and of potassium concentration on this transfer factor were studied.
