The mechanism of an unusual exchange of substituents in a previously unknown reaction of alkylene oxides with organic compounds containing β-hydroxyalkyl groups at the S, Se, N, and P heteroatoms is examined. Such exchange reactions are demonstrated to occur in many systems. The reactions of alkylene oxide with β-hydroxyalkyl sulfides are studied quantitatively.
