Single crystal of M phase Yb:YTaO4 was grown by the Czochralski method. Large emission cross-section (1.05times10-20 cm2), wide FWHM of absorption and emission, and long lifetime (0.74 ms), indicate that Yb:YTaO4 is very promising laser crystal used in all solid state ultra-short laser.
Summary form only given. In summary we introduce a new family of borate crystals, which can be grown by the Czochralski method. The first element of this family was characterized for femtosecond nonlinear optical effects and compared favorably with existing crystals such as BBO.
