Some of the best wind and natural gas resources in Norway are located in rural areas. Hydrogen can be produced from natural gas in combination with carbon capture and storage to utilize the natural gas resources without significant CO2-emissions. The hydrogen can be liquefied and transported to regions with energy deficits. This creates a demand for hydrogen produced from electrolysis of water, which...
In this work we use a production scheduling model based on Stochastic Dual Dynamic Programming (SDDP) to investigate the effects of coordinating hydro and wind power production in a transmission-constrained area. A case study is performed on an aggregated representation of a region in western Norway for a future situation with a significant integration of wind power. Two strategies for hydro reservoir...
This paper presents a model for the prediction of hourly day-ahead prices in the Nordic electricity market. The aim is to make a model suited for scenario generation for stochastic optimization of bids for a hydro power producer. Hourly prices are estimated through panel data methodology, and the analysis shows that most external explanation factors should have hour-specific coefficients.
The increasing share of renewable energy sources and its “‘merit-order effect’” have a substantial impact on the profitability of conventional power plants in the power system. This paper presents an analysis of the profitability of power plants under the large-scale integration of variable renewable energy sources, targeting the question for sufficient incentives to maintain resource adequacy in...
A coordinated strategy between wind and reversible hydro units for the mid-term that reduces the imbalance of wind power and improves system efficiency is proposed. A stochastic mixed integer linear model is used, which maximizes the joint profit of wind and hydro energies and Conditional Value at Risk (CVaR), where CVaR is the tool utilized to model risk. The offering strategies studied are: i) separate...
Due to their ability to quickly vary their operation point, hydro power plants emerge as the most viable solution to promote the secure integration of wind power production, as they are able to compensate the short term variations of wind production, maintaining the balance between global generation and demand. The hydro power plants equipped with pumping systems, in addition to the flexible operation,...
To limit the impact of the intermittence of wind power, a water storage ability of the hydraulic storage plant combined with a wind power plant, called the wind-hydro power system (WS), is used. The main objective is to limit the active power output variations of wind energy resource taking into account the grid needs and the available stored energy. The problem is formulated as an optimization problem...
Due to the increasing concern over the environmental impact and sustainability of conventional fossil-fueled power plants, renewable energy sources are becoming an important part of the generation mix in many electricity markets. In particular, wind power has taken an active role in the Spanish system by participating both in the day-ahead spot market and in the base-load energy auctions organized...
