We show that quasi-single-mode transmission in few-mode fibers (FMFs) can reduce the number of spans for a fixed transmission distance and, consequently, the cost per bit for terrestrial transmission systems by minimizing both the Capex and Opex. The Gaussian-noise model is employed to estimate the nonlinear noise power spectral density both, which depends on the effective area of the FMF and span...
An injection-locked laser based pilot carrier enhancement technique is proposed for self-coherent OFDM. An improvement of 2.2 dB is observed when compared to Fabry-Perot filter based self-coherent OFDM.
In transparent WDM networks, the optical signal crosses various equipments (cross-connect, amplifiers and sub-fibre) and while the signal is propagated, the optical components causes their degradation. Thus, paths with low quality signal should be avoided, especially when the application requires quality of service (QoS). In this context, an appropriate allocation of resources requires encompassing...
A path computation-capable network management system (NMS) which enables to manage topology and physical impairments, and create GMPLS-based lightpaths according to path computation results. Control and management capabilities have been evaluated using all-optical network testbed.
We designed and built a novel all-optical re-timing, re-amplifying, and re-shaping (3R) regeneration system based on terahertz optical asymmetric demultiplexers (TOADs) developed in our laboratory. The system is capable of parallel processing multiple wavelengths, a feature which will significantly improve the scalability of current wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks. Performance against...
We study the effect of polarization dependent loss (PDL) on the signal to noise ratio of optical communications systems. We discuss the value of dynamic gain equalization in this context and show that in most cases of interest, the penalties that are induced by PDL are caused by the coupling of noise that is emitted into a state of polarization that is orthogonal to the signal.
