Ceria submonolayers consisting of nanosized 2D islands on a Cu(111) surface have been prepared by oxidation of the nucleating Ce submonolayer (0.7ML) and characterized using XPS and STM. The reducibility of the resulting well-defined CeO 2−x /Cu(111) model system of the “inverse supported catalyst” type was studied by XPS using CO as reducing agent. In order to investigate the contribution...
Ultra-thin copper films on Ni(111) (Θ Cu =<1ML) were studied by the adsorption of CO followed by high resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Saturating the surface at 100K with CO leads to adsorption on the entire surface, i.e. Cu-covered as well as bare Ni(111) areas. Upon annealing to 220K the Cu-bonded CO molecules desorb leaving only the Ni-areas covered with CO. High resolution...
