By leveraging Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC), resource-poor mobile devices are enabled to run rich media applications. In this article, we review mobile cloud computing, with focus on the technical challenges of MCC for multimedia applications, and briefly review the prototypes. The article is concluded with a discussion of several open research problems that call for substantial research efforts.
The wide deployment of Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) we are witnessing today increases connectivity opportunities for mobile terminal devices, such as smartphones. However, continuous scanning for WLAN points of attachment can be a power exhausting mechanism for such battery-powered devices. These mobile devices, besides being equipped with different wireless access interfaces, are also coupled...
Due to the rapid and independent developments of systems, heterogeneity has become a common feature of current networks. In order to harmonize two different networks and close the gap between their technologies, we need to develop a good mechanism for network selection, and access that best satisfy user requirements. Many public areas (collages, airports, hotels...etc) have different systems for providing...
Mobile users' demand for using the best available network connection encourages mobile network operators (MNOs) to construct multi-access networks managed by all-IP based mobile networks. For such an MNO, the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is a promising service control infrastructure to provide IP-based multimedia services with QoS guarantee in the multi-access network. The service centralization...
The proposed system aims to provide useful tool kits to create more effective and interactive learning environment through the use of mobile devices. This system facilitates a flexible way in delivering the course contents and interaction among the instructor and students. It allows students to take notes or to submit answers and feedbacks during a lecture in media formats customized to the users'...
In this paper, we consider the design of caching infrastructure to enhance the client-perceived performance of mobile wireless clients retrieving multimedia objects from the Internet. We consider three primary issues: location of the cache, size of the cache, and management policy for the cache. We consider both infrastructure-oriented caching at the Access Point (AP), as well as peer-assisted caching...
There is a rapid growth and evolution in the area of telecommunications and network operators are expected to provide seamless integration of all communication applications on a single system. In these circumstances IMS has emerged out as a key player. IMS is basically a network architecture consisting of an IP-based core network connected to multiple access networks to provide a converged service...
