Human motor control relies on a combination of feedback and feedforward strategies. The aim of this study was to longitudinally investigate artificial somatosensory feedback and feedforward control in the context of grasping with myoelectric prosthesis. Nine amputee subjects performed routine grasping trials, with the aim to produce four levels of force during four blocks of 60 trials across five...
This paper presents the development of a myoelectric prosthetic hand based on a 3D printed model. A myoelectric control strategy based on artificial neural networks is implemented on a microcontroller for online position estimation. Position estimation performance achieves a correlation index of 0.78. Also a study involving transcutaneous electrical stimulation was performed to provide tactile feedback...
Modern technology has taken great strides to restore motion to amputees with prostheses. A key limitation in many cases is lack of a reliable controlling interface to the prosthetic devices. To address this issue, our lab has developed the Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface (RPNI). RPNIs transduce signals between residual peripheral nerves, muscle grafts, and prosthetic devices. Prior to this...
We provide a preliminary report on work to relate the EMG activity from forearm flexors and extensors to the flexion-extension forces generated at the finger tips during constant-posture, slowly force-varying contractions. EMG electrode arrays (up to 64 channels) were applied over the flexor and, separately, extensor musculature of the forearm. Spatial filters were used to create derived EMG channels...
The multi-DOF prosthetic hand's myocontrol needs to recognize more hand gestures (or motions) based on myoelectric signals. This paper presents a classification method, which is based on the support vector machine (SVM), to classify 19 different hand gesture modes through electromyographic (EMG) signals acquired from six surface myoelectric electrodes. All hand gestures are based on a 3-DOF configuration,...
In this paper, we demonstrate for the first time radio controlled stimulation of the neuromuscular system of the tobacco hawkmoth Manduca sexta to direct its flight. Silver and gold wire electrodes were implanted in the insect brain and thorax through Early Metamorphosis Insertion Technology, where a reliable mechanical attachment and electrical coupling was obtained with the insect tissue as a result...
This paper discusses an EMG controlled prosthetic forearm with three degrees of freedom actuated by small size ultrasonic motors. Its weight is less than 700 g and the size is the same as the adult's forearm. It produces no motion noise. In addtion, it is possible to control six kinds of motions i.e. pronation and supnation of the forearm, flection and extension of the wrist, and grasping and hand-opening.
