This article presents the losses of a 5 MW wind turbine generating system comprising of a permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctance generator (PMaSynRG) system as well as an IGBT equipped forced-commutated inverter. In this article, the focus is on the classical 2-level converter and the NPC converter. Their inverter losses using three types of modules were calculated and compared.
The whole world is focusing on the utilization of renewable energy sources in order to mitigate the world power crisis. Power electronics is being used in a large scale for the renewable energy conversion in a more efficient manner. It has a great impact on controlling as well as interfacing the renewable system with both the grid and standalone applications. Hence more and more emphasis is given...
The wind generation system treated in this paper is composed of a fixed pitch angle wind turbine followed by a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) and power electronic converters AC-DC-AC which are coupled to a DC link. This work deals with the control of the inverter in order to ensure a constant DC link voltage. The control design is based on Takagi Sugeno fuzzy model. Stability analysis...
This paper reports on the design and testing results from the U.S. Department of Energy Next-Generation Wind Turbine Drivetrain Project. The drivetrain design reduces the cost of energy by increasing energy capture through drivetrain efficiency improvements; by reducing operation and maintenance costs through reducing gearbox failures; and by lowering capital costs through weight reduction and a series...
Fuel cell is an emerging energy source, which is characterized with advantages feature like non dependency of environment conditions, clean source of power generation etc. Use of fuel in grid independent operation may be attributed with challenges like load transients and voltage unbalancing. The paper presents and innovative approach to mitigate the challenges face during the grid independent operation...
Wind energy is a prominent area of application of variable-speed generators operating on the constant grid frequency. This paper describes the operation and control of one of these variable-speed wind generators: the direct driven permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). This generator is connected to the power network by means of a fully controlled frequency converter, which consists of a pulse-width-modulation...
With increasing load demand and global warming, an environment-friendly type of energy solutions to preserve the earth for the future generations has become a prerequisite. Other than hydro power, many such energy sources like wind and solar energy is highly potential sources to meet our energy demands. Systems which uses two or more renewable energy sources is is better than the single source system...
This paper investigates a novel method to compensate the reactive power losses incurred in a wind energy conversion system equipped with maximum power point tracking. A variable speed generator is used here, which is a permanent magnet generator. In order to enable protection from mechanical damages of Wind Energy Conversion System, pitch angle control is employed which is an advanced pitch angle...
In today's renewable domain as the wind is an intermittent source, but the main encounter in wind system is to sustain a constant voltage at the output since the variation of wind speed is unpredictable. So, a Quasi Z Source inverter for wind power conversion system with MPPT controller, which is appropriately taken care in the steady state through buck-boost capability of quasi z source inverter...
This paper presents a battery-based storage (BBS) for wind generator (WG) system. The BBS is composed by an Asymmetric Cascaded H-Bridge Multilevel Inverter (ACMI) with staircase modulation. The proposed structure is connected in parallel to the whole WG system. Such connection plus the use of the ACMI allow a reduction in the power losses, compared to the commonly found storages connected where the...
CSC topology with natural advantages in terms of simple structure, grid friendly waveforms, controllable power factor, and reliable grid short-circuit protection is considered to be a promising converter configuration for use in mediumvoltage (kV) high-power (MW) PMSG based wind energy systems. In view of this, three types of configurations for current source converter (CSC) based medium-voltage PMSG...
Photovoltaic (PV) and wind energies are renewable and clean, which can be alternative to fossil fuels. The PV/wind hybrid system optimal design problem is the hot topic nowadays. The aim of the optimal design is to develop an independent energy supply system with minimum total annual cost and loss power supply probability by determining the number of PV panels, wind turbines and backup batteries....
Over the years, harnessing solar power to produce direct current and subsequent electricity to drive either AC or DC load is gaining popularity, not only due to its pre-eminent advantages but also the relatively reduced costs. In a country like Pakistan which is struggling to meet its energy demands, solar power offers the perfect solution in terms of utility in remote areas where conventional power...
This paper proposes a new technique for enhancement of energy extraction capabilities in wind energy conversion systems with low cut-in speed. The dc-link voltage is maintained by the grid-side converter in wind energy systems equipped with back-to-back three-phase inverters. This voltage is required to be higher than a certain value to ensure proper operation of the grid-side converter. On the other...
The rapid increase in global energy consumption and the impact of greenhouse gas emissions has accelerated the transition towards greener energy sources. The need for distributed generation employing renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and fuel cells has gained significant momentum. Advanced power electronic systems, affordable high performance devices, and smart energy management principles...
This paper examines a position sensorless modulation strategy, called V-θ control, for six-switch fully-controlled rectifiers (inverters) for surface permanent magnet (SPM) generators in small-scale wind turbines. In this strategy, the SPM generator torque is commanded by controlling the magnitude of the phase voltage and its phase shift with respect to the current waveform. Simulated results obtained...
In the current global energy scenario, importance of power generation from renewable energy sources is increasing day by day. The major reasons for this are limited availability of fossil fuels and environmental hazards associated with traditional power generation methods. Out of the various grid connected renewable energy systems, solar photo-voltaic and wind energy systems are most popular. This...
The use of renewable energy sources are increased because of the depletion of natural resources and the increasing pollution level from energy production. The wind energy and the solar energy are most widely used among the renewable energy sources. Power electronics is needed in almost all kinds of renewable energy system.
