In the drive for the development of wideband array antennas for military applications, a well designed balun is essential to achieve overall antenna performance. However, for balanced antenna arrays to be driven effectively, antiphase element feeds are required at the correct impedance over multiple octaves. This paper summarises balun design options in microstrip and stripline for use with highly...
Wideband connected arrays of dipoles are a very promising solution for broadband, wide-angle scanning phased arrays. Unlike tapered slot antennas, connected arrays can operate over wide bandwidth maintaining polarization purity. However, an open issue for the practical implementation of these arrays is the propagation of common-mode currents along the differential feeding lines. A solution for this...
This paper presents a wide-band Yagi-Uda antenna with X-shape driven dipoles and parasitic elements using differential evolution algorithm (DE). In the optimization process, a method of moments code, NEC code simulates the antenna designs generated by DE. In order to illustrate the capabilities of the method, a nine-element Yagi-Uda antenna is given. The measured and simulated impedance bandwidth...
A new approach to the design of modular wideband arrays has been proposed. The simulation results for several small array configurations indicate that a bandwidth enhancement may be possible that is greater than 2.5:1. In addition these arrays could also possess superior gain at lower frequencies. Further work related to measurements is currently in progress.
Using an equivalent circuit, a new wideband array was examined using physically realizable tightly coupled dipoles. A miniaturized element using inductive and capacitive loading was used to suppress ground plane effects for a broadband conformal array. Serial inductance was demonstrated to effectively miniaturize the radiating element and lead to even greater bandwidth as compared to the CSA array...
Wideband mm-wave end-fire and planar log-periodic antennas compatible with a recently developed surface micromachined process known as PolyStratatrade are discussed in this paper. Two embodiments of each log-periodic type are developed. Specifically, an instantaneous 2-110 GHz and a dual-band 18-50 GHz and 75-110 GHz planar log-periodic antennas with integrated rectangular micro-coaxial feeds/impedance...
A broad band antenna consisting of half wave strip dipoles the arms of which are printed on opposite sides of a thin substrate is proposed. Four-element array is fabricated. The feed network comprised of power dividers and impedance transformers is designed to improve antenna performance. Antennas have bandwidth greater than 21% for VSWR<1.5 (without reflector) and 20% for VSWR<2 (with reflector)...
