Improving resilience against failures and targeted attacks is an important aspect of network design. The resilience and cost of networks are two opposing objectives in which a designer should consider when building networks. We develop a heuristic algorithm that balances the centrality of networks by adding a set of links that minimizes the variance of graph centrality measures in a least costly fashion...
This workshop focuses on dependability and security of software and services. Service-based systems are being used in business and safety-critical environments to achieve operational goals and possess special characteristics that have been bringing difficult challenges to the research and industry communities for several years now. Among such challenges, dependability and security have been widely...
Background: The large computational infrastructures required to provide the on-demand services that most users are now used to are more prone to failures than any single computational device. Thus, fault management is a essential activity in the realization of the cloud computing model. Aims: This work aims at identifying well-explored topics on fault management in cloud computing as well as pin-pointing...
The paper provides a short introduction to the European perspectives on the role of teaching, education and training in context of achieving a sustainable innovation eco-system as e.g. the European Technology Platform ARTEMIS is aiming at. Studies and examples from different European projects are discussed, including the ARTEMIS Strategic Research Agenda and Multi-annual Strategic Plan and the ARTEMIS...
Undersea gliders have the capability of travelling further than conventional propelled autonomous vehicles. Their long endurance enables marine scientists to perform in situ observations in a sustainable way, which thus far has only been possible with moorings and surface vessels. In terms of functionality undersea gliders can meet the desired observation requirement. However, previous reliability...
The resilience infrastructure is a physically and functionally separate add-on to a “Client” computing and/or communication system that provides resilience to the Client system. This short paper summarizes the main features of the architecture of a resilience infrastructure.
In this paper we investigate the application of Software Aging and Rejuvenation in the context of Critical Infrastructures and Systems-of-Systems. Explained are the characteristics of Systems-of-Systems and classes of Critical Systems, attributes which define their dependability as a high priority requirement. In addition we survey Software Aging and Rejuvenation establishing founding research and...
The more information systems become complex, the more difficult it is to operate dependably. In this paper, we propose a method for reviewing operation manuals of information systems based on assurance case to verify the dependability of information systems. We show a preliminary result on applying the method to the operation manual for the supercomputer of Nagoya University.
The MEDIAN (ManufacturablE and Dependable multI-core Architectures at Nanoscale) project is a EU funded COST Action aimed at creating a European network of competence and experts on all dependability aspects of future digital systems development, promoting collaboration between industry and research.
Cloud computing has emerged as popular paradigm that enables the establishment of large scale, flexible computing infrastructures that can offer significant cost savings for both businesses and consumers by allowing compute resources to be scaled dynamically to deal with current or anticipated usage [1]. This concept has been further strengthened with the emergence of federated computing Clouds that...
Bayesian networks are often proposed as a method for high-level information fusion. However, a Bayesian network relies on strong assumptions about the underlying probabilities. In many cases it is not realistic to require such precise probability assessments. We show that there exists a significant set of problems where credal networks outperform Bayesian networks, thus enabling more dependable decision...
