Recent technological advances allowed the word to construct several wearable products that can capture and process the human body bio-signals. The PPG signal becomes one of the most contenders in heart rate monitoring due to their prominent features, flexibility, effectiveness and low costs. This paper present a novel System of PPG Heart rate calculation based on FPGA, using the Pan and Tompkins as...
This paper presents an FPGA based real-time lane detection system for automotive applications. To reduce the computational complexity, the conventional Canny-Hough lane detection algorithm is modified for achieving the real-time processing. The prototype design is realized by using the commercialized FPGA platform and the processing rate is enhanced by 41% compared to the previous detection algorithm.
Nowadays, image and video processing applications are becoming widely used in many domains including industrials, medical imaging, manufacturing, and security systems. Real time image and video processing is a very demanding task as it needs to perform high computations for a big amount of data represented by the image, and the complex operations, which may need to be performed on the image. For these...
Platform-Based Design (PBD) is an appropriate method to make a trade-off among different requirements and constraints in embedded systems, such as power, performance and cost. This paper presents a hardware and software all programmable platform with a processor-programmable logic hardware architecture and a Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) centric software architecture. The corresponding RTOS-centric...
Extreme learning machine (ELM) is an emerging approach that has attracted the attention of the research community because it outperforms conventional back-propagation feed-forward neural networks and support vector machines (SVM) in some aspects. ELM provides a robust learning algorithm, free of local minima, suitable for high speed computation, and less dependant on human intervention than the above...
Embedded systems are shaping a new world. There is no sector immune to their adoption and the effects in the long term are unpredictable and fascinating. Embedded systems are designed by embedded system engineers. What technical education and what kind of practical skills these new engineers will need? This is a complex and unanswered question. In this paper we describe our proposal to equip engineering...
Stereo matching is a vital task in several emerging embedded vision applications requiring high-quality depth computation and real-time frame-rate. Although several stereo matching dedicated-hardware systems have been proposed in recent years, only few of them focus on balancing accuracy and speed. This paper proposes a hardware-based stereo matching architecture that aims to provide high accuracy...
Overheads due to context switching and external interrupt management are core characteristics for Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS) since they play a central role in their performance and timeliness. In this paper we evaluate two core characteristics for the Real-Time Executive for Multiprocessor Systems (RTEMS), an operating system used for supporting space applications. Our assessment makes use...
<?Pub Dtl?>With embedded systems becoming ubiquitous, there is a growing need to teach and train engineers to be well-versed in their design and development. The multidisciplinary nature of such systems makes it challenging to give students exposure to and experience in all their facets. This paper proposes a generic architecture, containing multiple processors, that allows easy integration...
A component based hybrid embedded framework for mobile robot is presented in this paper. There are 3 layers in this framework, data layer, real-time layer, and high performance layer. The hardware consists of a hybrid architecture of Advanced RISC Machine (ARM) architecture micro controller and Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) with high-speed parallel/serial bus. The software mainly includes a...
CF card has been widely used in embedded systems development and consumer electronics, due to its high-capacity, nonvolatile data storage, small dimension, easily to be upgraded, shock resistance and other features. In this paper, the interface design between FPGA and the CF was presented, the read and write operations on the CF card were implemented by using FPGA as controller, and high-volume data...
Quantum-behaved Particle Swarm Optimization (QPSO) algorithm is the algorithm proposed by our group to improve traditional PSOs. Comparing with traditional PSOs, the QPSO has better global-convergence and fewer parameters. Both PSO and QPSO were generally considered to have high requirement for the computing platform; hence, it is thought impractical to employ them into resource-constrained embedded...
Reconfigurable embedded system provides a flexible platform for hardware circuit implementation. Embedded systems often come with stringent performance and power requirements, leading the designers to incorporate special purpose hardware accelerator into their design. Furthermore, the tight timing requirement for the software design can be met using real time operating system. In this paper, we have...
