The consequences of obesity reach far beyond detriments to physical health. This chapter reviews the evidence of stigma and social consequences associated with obesity in areas of education, employment, healthcare, and interpersonal relationships. In addition, this chapter summarizes the negative implications of weight stigma for both emotional and physical health of obese individuals, and highlights its impact on obese youth, who are especially vulnerable to negative outcomes resulting from bias and victimization. With these literatures assembled, the need for interventions to reduce weight bias is clear. The current status of research targeting stigma reduction strategies is briefly summarized, with a discussion of future directions for the field.
