While listening skills are critical to communication, equally important is the message we send. Since beliefs are internal and invisible to the outside world, words and actions are the only tools we have to communicate these beliefs and inspire trust. When we improve our messaging, listening becomes easier for others. With GRIT, we are more mindful of the messages we send. We are thinking about what the other person is receiving. Paying attention to people and adapting to talk their language will help people understand our message. One very effective tool is the DiSC assessment. We are not always aware of the nonverbal messages we are sending, and sometimes they are not what we are intending. Selecting the words that keep one in integrity and respect is key to successful relationships at work and elsewhere.
