This chapter illustrates the African American who experienced career development courses in the McDonald industry for their employment. Training and education provide the foundation for making diversity work for the employee. Bob Beavers was one of the many African American employees brought into McDonald's home office from Washington, D.C. to help diversify the owner/operator base. At that point, McDonald's had grown to some 1,300 restaurants and was looking to step up the pace of its expansion. One of the key factors that helped potential African American franchisees overcome the investment hurdles to restaurant ownership was a new understanding with the Small Business Administration and its SBA loan guarantee program.
