This chapter provides an overview of the strategy development and execution transformation driven through the Windows organization. To maintain its integrity, any Microsoft Windows strategy needs to deliver productivity and innovation in the personal computer ecosystem. Achieving strategic integrity requires a process that brings alignment to the entire organization, top down, bottom up, and middle out. During the second half of 2006, the Windows team began to implement a participatory approach to strategy development, delineating how each component of the organization needed to adapt to confront its challenges. As the task of developing the new strategy began, the team embraced a powerful framework to create alignment and translate potential into impact. This framework, with foundations in organization, planning, and decision‐making systems, provided the guideposts to create an organization capable of translating strategy into actions. The plan also extended to cover not only the firm's internal operations but also those of its business ecosystem.
