This chapter lays the intellectual framework and reasons for why Treasurers must act as a business partner and use their unique strengths to help the business. For being strategic, Treasurers must act as business partners. They must provide their internal customers reasons to call regularly and seek their input, guidance, and help. To be a business partner requires an understanding of the other departments' needs and knowing in what ways Treasury can best assist them in accomplishing their goals. For the Treasurer, being a partner means bringing analytical rigor and external perspectives to the table. It requires being able to identify and mitigate risks in a way that protects the organization and can help the other internal parties. It also requires clarity of thought, hard work, and taking the initiative with some activities that may be outside of their comfort zone.
