This chapter explicates a universal model of leadership development, a consciousness‐based model grounded in experience, theory, research, and psychometrics. Unity consciousness is the highest level of consciousness in human experience. The chapter relates unity consciousness to leadership, effectiveness, or mastery. The best metaphor one can think of for describing the relationship to unity is that we are like waves on the ocean, not separate from the ocean. In the Western spiritual traditions, the highest levels of experience are described as union with God. The chapter shows how one holds the dilemma of developing the self that is no‐self. It presents two arguments for the necessity of development. First, no amount of unity consciousness will equip one to design an aircraft if he/she has not deeply studied calculus, physics, and the principles of aeronautical engineering. Second, only the mature ego can be surrendered.
