The bridge to performance is built by developing the activators as parts of an integrated management system. The real power of the five activators model is in the interdependence and mutual reinforcement across the five. This chapter reviews the activators, with emphasis on the interaction among the five. Two of the five activators, unique value‐adding layers and innovation and execution networks, help to assure the right connections are built into the organization. The chapter explores two critical activators, namely business handshake and power, governance, and decision making that help shape the right conversations through smart operating mechanisms, including annual operating plans, goal alignment, budgeting, and performance management practices. In companies that fully activate the global operating model, a pipeline of matrix‐ready leadership is the result of disciplined assessment, selection and development practices, clearly defined behavioral criteria, and deep commitment to talent development throughout the company.
