The only purpose of an architecture description (AD) is to explain the architecture of a system to its stakeholders. An AD shall document how a certain design satisfies stakeholder requirements or even stakeholder needs. The AD supports an architect in communication with stakeholders about the system of interest. It documents both, rationales and architecture decisions. An AD needs at least to address stakeholders that are relevant for the success of the system. The AD should comprise of four AD elements: architecture viewpoints, architecture views, architecture decisions and architecture rationales. Architects should be aware that architecture decisions do not only pertain to concerns, but may also raise new concerns. An architecture decision may cause new impacts to processes operated by already identified or other stakeholders. Architecture decisions shall also trace to affected AD elements.
