The product leadership value discipline is evolving to the solution leadership digital discipline: smart, connected products and smart, connected service delivery elements connected over mobile and wireline networks to back‐end cloud‐based services, social networks, and larger ecosystems. For example, the watch has evolved from mechanical, to digital, to electronic, to smart, extensible, and connected; so have jet engines, buildings, soccer balls, and athletic shoes. This transformation is more than just an additional architectural element. Solutions enable ongoing customer relationships; a focus on not just sales, but customer outcomes; the delivery of experiences and transformations; sale of not just products but complementary services such as maintenance and support; and a change in pricing from one‐time product sales to other models, such as subscriptions. Connected solutions also enable functions enabling the augmented product, such as monitoring, control, and other forms of intelligence such as optimization; and functions enabling the potential product, such as modifiability, extensibility, adaptability, and upgradability.
