Recognizing postoperative pain can be challenging in veterinary patients, so we should assume that anything deemed painful to humans will be painful in the species we treat. Benefits of providing analgesia include lower complication rates and faster recoveries, as well as alleviating patient suffering. Many options for postoperative analgesia exist, including nonsteroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs, local anesthetics, opioids and adjunctive therapies. This chapter describes those therapies and provides guidelines to treat postoperative pain. Most patients will benefit from a combination of the drugs/methods listed here, providing the most complete pain control possible.
