The chapter begins with a discussion of the early work that inaugurated and established the field of gender and language research. It then describes research that focuses on the discourse of women and men, and surveys developments in theorizing the relationship between gender and discourse. Moving on to recent themes and trends, it covers research on the intersectionality of race, class, sexuality, and gender, as well as gender diversity in discourse; the consideration of sexuality and other facets of identity in the study of gender and discourse; discursive differences within, as well as between, groups; and how normative identities and practices are supported or opposed. The chapter concludes with research on computer‐mediated discourse, wherein new forms of previously described patterns have been identified
