The author, an executive at the Royal Caribbean Group, who was appointed President & CEO/Chief Executive Officer of its Celebrity Cruises brand in late 2014, discusses her leadership journey, including dealing with the global pandemic. The latter shut down the global cruise industry for 15 months, yet planning for the future was maintained. “Our chairman,” she writes, “was working with other cruise company leaders, health experts and government leaders to keep the dialogue going in the hope that we would eventually be given the green light to start cruising again. It was a long and arduous time.” She is candid about the uncertainties during this time period: “I felt a big responsibility to rally my team, to understand what they were going through, to keep them confident, energized, and optimistic that we would get through this, even on those days when I wasn’t so sure myself.” Reflecting on the success of the return of its cruise ships, she recalls leadership lessons, including: “When you have that level of trust and confidence in your team and they look at you and ask, “Should we do it?” You say “Yes!” And when I learned another valuable lesson. When your team knows they have your trust and confidence, they, in turn are not going to let you down.”
