Cette étude a été menée pour identifier les facteurs déterminants de la participation à l'agriculture irriguée et pour estimer son impact sur le revenu agricole des ménages et la sécurité alimentaire à l'aide de données transversales collectées dans le district de Gimbo, dans le sud‐ouest de l'Éthiopie. Les données primaires de cette étude ont été recueillies auprès de 200 ménages irrigués et de 219 ménages non irrigués au moyen d'un questionnaire structuré. Des analyses descriptives et économétriques ont été utilisées pour analyser les données en utilisant le revenu agricole, l'apport calorique, la sécurité alimentaire binaire et la diversité alimentaire comme variables de résultat. Comme le révèle le résultat de l'évaluation d'impact utilisant l'adéquation des scores de propension, l'irrigation à petite échelle augmente significativement et positivement l'apport calorique, le revenu agricole annuel et le groupe alimentaire de 320 kcal, 7653 ETB, et 0.65 point, respectivement. Les résultats obtenus à partir du modèle logit ont en outre révélé que l'âge du chef de ménage, le niveau d'éducation du chef de ménage, la distance de la terre par rapport à la source d'irrigation, la taille des terres, le revenu non agricole/non agricole, la distance par rapport au marché le plus proche, la pente de la terre et l'accès aux services d'irrigation sont les variables qui ont une incidence significative sur la participation à l'irrigation. Compte tenu de la contribution importante de la petite irrigation au revenu agricole annuel et à la sécurité alimentaire des ménages ruraux, les priorités politiques devraient être axées sur la sensibilisation à la pertinence des technologies d'irrigation en informant les ménages sur la part des ménages irrigueurs par rapport aux nonirrigueurs en termes de revenu agricole annuel et de sécurité alimentaire. L'étude recommande en outre au gouvernement et à tout autre organisme concerné de travailler à l'expansion de l'agriculture irriguée et au développement technologique des petits périmètres d'irrigation.
