Agregación de Rango del Conocimiento de Expertos Locales para la Planificación de la Conservación de la Saola, Especie en Peligro Crítico
Resumen
Recientemente ha habido mucho interés en el uso del conocimiento local y la opinión de expertos para la planificación de la conservación, particularmente para especies difíciles de detectar. Aunque es posible preguntar por una estimación directa de cantidades como el tamaño poblacional, es más fácil estimar la abundancia relativa. Sin embargo, el conocimiento de un experto está restringido frecuentemente de manera geográfica en relación al área de interés. Combinar (o agregar) las valoraciones de los expertos sobre la abundancia relativa es complicado cuando cada experto sólo conoce una parte del área de interés. Utilizamos el algoritmo PageRank de Google para agregar los puntajes de abundancia clasificada obtenidos de expertos locales por medio de un método de valoración rural rápida. Aplicamos esta técnica a la planificación de la conservación para la saola (Pseudoryx nghetinhensis), un bóvido poco conocido. Cerca de un paisaje prioritario para la especie, compuesto por tres áreas protegidas contiguas, le pedimos a grupos de habitantes locales que nos indicaran la abundancia relativa de saolas y otras especies por medio de la colocación de frijoles en mapas comunitarios. Para cada aldea utilizamos esta información para clasificar las áreas dentro del área de conocimiento de esa aldea para la abundancia de la saola. Utilizamos simulaciones para comparar los métodos alternativos para agregar las clasificaciones de las diferentes aldeas. El método con el mejor desempeño después se utilizó para producir un mapa único de la abundancia relativa a lo largo de todo el paisaje, un área más grande que aquella conocida para cualquier aldea única. Este mapa ha permitido la priorización de censos y acciones de conservación en la ausencia prolongada de información directa acerca de la saola.
