Die Prozessindustrie steht im intensivierten, globalen Wettbewerb der Herausforderung zunehmender Marktdynamiken gegenüber. Modular aufgebaute, wandlungsfähige Produktionskonzepte versprechen eine verbesserte Anpassung an diese in den Dimensionen Mengenausbringung, Produktmix und Produktionsort. Um das gesamte Potenzial entfalten zu können, bedarf es nicht nur einer Modularisierung und Wandlungsbefähigung auf der Anlagen‐ und Logistikebene, sondern auch auf der Apparateebene. Charakteristika wie Aufbau und Skalierungskonzepte werden diskutiert. Beispiele für modulare Apparate aus den Bereichen Mischen, Wärmeübertragung, Reaktion und Trennung werden vorgestellt und weiterer Forschungsbedarf abgeleitet.
